چکیده

We study separating equilibria (SE) in pure signaling games in which both type and signaling spaces aremultidimensional, the sender payoff is quasi-linear and receiver utility is independent of the signal (pure signaling case). We show for a large class of cost functions that a sender’s strategy constitutes an SE if and only if it satisfies a certain set of conditions. In particular, we show that the sender’s strategy in an SE is given as a solution of a certain minimization problem. This is reminiscent of the derivation of the Hicksian demand function in traditional consumer theory. Our model is more general than Quinzii and Rochet [11], who characterize SE in the case of separable, linear cost functions. We reconstruct some of their results by using our characterization. Noisy signaling: Theory and experiment

We investigate a noisy signaling game, in which nature adds random noise to the (costly) message chosen. Theoretically, with an unfavorable prior the separating equilibrium vanishes for low noise. It reappears for intermediate levels of noise, where messages increase with noise. A pooling equilibrium always exists. In our experiment, noise works as an empirical equilibrium selection device. Whe...

The Dynamics of Costly Signaling

Costly signaling and screening are two mechanisms through which the honesty of signals can be secured in equilibrium. This paper explores the dynamics of one such signaling game: Spence’s model of education. It is found that separating equilibria are unlikely to emerge under either the replicator or best response dynamics, but that partially communicative mixed equilibria are quite important dy...

The Welfare Cost of Signaling

Might the resource costliness of making signals credible be low or negligible? Using a job market as an example, we build a signaling model to determine the extent to which a transfer from an applicant might replace a resource cost as an equilibrium method of achieving signal credibility. Should a firm’s announcement of hiring for an open position be believed, the firm has an incentive to use a...

Nash Equilibrium Strategy for Bi-matrix Games with L-R Fuzzy Payoffs

In this paper, bi-matrix games are investigated based on L-R fuzzy variables. Also, based on the fuzzy max order several models in non-symmetrical L-R fuzzy environment is constructed and the existence condition of Nash equilibrium strategies of the fuzzy bi-matrix games is proposed. At last, based on the Nash equilibrium of crisp parametric bi-matrix games, we obtain the Pareto and weak Pareto...

Rationalization in Signaling Games: Theory and Applications

Focusing on signaling games, I illustrate the relevance of the rationalizability approach for the analysis multistage games with incomplete information. I define a class of iterative solution procedures, featuring a notion of “forward induction”: the Receiver tries to explain the Sender’s message in a way which is consistent with the Sender’s strategic sophistication and certain given restricti...
